A Kaleidoscope of Time
Mark 13 part 2
Good morning, Happy New Year!  I would like to thank again Pastor Shin for the privilege of meeting with you and sharing from God’s word. Last week we set out to look at Chapter 13 of Mark. Mark 13 comes as Jesus enters his final days before his death. As Jesus walks with his disciples he takes a moment to consider the future beyond his death and resurrection.

안녕하세요. 새해 복많이 받으세요! 여러분들과의 만남과 하나님의 말씀을 나누는 특권을 허락해준 신목사님께 다시한번 감사를 드립니다. 지난주 우리는 마가복음 13장을  보기 시작했습니다.  마가복음13장은 예수님이 돌아가시기 전 그분의 마지막 며칠을 맞이하는 것으로 나타납니다. 예수님이 제자들과 동행하며자신의 죽음과 부활 후의 미래에 대해 고찰하기 위해  잠시 시간을 갖습니다.


1As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!"  2"Do you see all these great buildings?" replied Jesus. "Not one stone here will be left on another; everyone will be thrown down." 3As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, 4"Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?"

1예수께서 성전을 떠나가실 때에, 제자들 가운데서 한 사람이 예수께 말하였다. "선생님, 보십시오, 얼마나 굉장한 돌입니까! 얼마나 굉장한 건물들입니까!"
2.예수께서 그에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 이 큰 건물들을 보고 있느냐? 여기에 돌 하나도 돌 위에 남지 않고 다 무너질 것이다."
3.예수께서 올리브 산에서 성전을 마주 보고 앉아 계실 때에, 베드로와 야고보와 요한과 안드레가 따로 예수께 물었다.
4."우리에게 말씀해 주십시오. 이런 일이 언제 일어나겠습니까? 또 이런 일들이 이루어지려고 할 때에는, 무슨 징조가 있겠습니까?"
 

 
Vs 4 tells us the chapter is framed by two questions
 
when this significant change will take place and what signs introduce this significant change.

4절은 두 질문에 의해 구성된다고 말해줍니다.
언제 이런 중대한 변화가 일어날 것인지, 그리고 어떤 징조가 이런 중대한 변화를 불러올 것인지에 대한 질문입니다.
지난 주 우리는 세가지 징조에 대해 살펴보았습니다. 이번 주는 언제 그런 징조들이 일어날 것인지에 대해 살필 것입니다. 

A Kaleidoscope of Time -The Question of When
 
Before we launch ourselves into this passage I want to consider why it is so important to understand the question of when. When? In this context is a question that interrogates the future, asks questions of the future. The importance of this question is that what you believe about the future very much determines the way you act in the present.
 
When Jane and I decided to get married many many hours were spent in preparation for the great day. I remember that for me it was particularly important that I had one kind of shirt-We spent many hours looking for it and then because some of my groomsman were so tall we had to order some from Melbourne! The future wedding day determined what I did everyday up until the wedding. What I saw in the future determined what I did in the present. Let us broaden the example.

우리가 이 질문 속으로 들어 가기 전에, 왜 언제에 관해 이해하는 것이 그렇게 중요한지를 알아 보기를 원합니다.
본문의 상황에서 언제? 는 미래에 대하여 캐묻는, 즉 미래에 관하여 질문하는 것입니다.이 질문이 중요한 것은미래가 어떨 것이라고 하는 신념이 현재 여러분의 행동 양식을 아예 결정하기 때문입니다.

제인과 제가 결혼하기로 결정하고 난 후, 큰일을 준비하는데 아주 많은 시간을 보냈습니다. 특별한 종류의 셔츠를 준비해야 하는 것이 제게는 특별히 중요했던 것을 기억합니다. 많은 시간을 그것을 찾는데 보냈고
 신랑 둘러리 중 몇 명이 아주 키가 컸기 때문에 우리는 멜번에 주문을 해야 했습니다. 장래에 있을 결혼식이 결혼식 당일까지 내가 하는 매일의 일들을 결정했습니다. 내가 미래에 있을 일이라고 생각했던 것들이 현재의  일들을 결정한 것입니다. 예를 좀더 넓혀볼까요 

You may believe that having the right education gives you security in the future. So when you have the right degree, when you son or daughter has the right education all will be secure. If you believe this then you will do everything you can to ensure that you or your children get the right education. That will determine how you live. You will be prepared to travel for many hours to get the best education. You will talk about it, fight about have dreams about it devote money to it and it may end up controlling your whole life. Why? Because what you see as the future determines how you live in the present.
If you believe that the best way to have happiness and security in the future is to have money then you will do everything in your power to have enough money of enough material possessions. It will control what you do day by day the sacrifices you are prepared to make and in some circumstances my lead you into sinful behavior.
여러분은 올바른 교육이 장래에 안정된 삶을 줄 것이라고 믿을지 모르겠습니다.  그래서 여러분이 적절한 학위를 가질 때, 여러분의 자녀들이 올바른 교육을 받을 때 모든 것이 안정 될 것이라고 생각합니다. 여러분이 이것을 믿는다면 여러분은 본인과 자녀들이 적절한 교육을 받도록 보장하기 위해 할 수 있는 모든 것을 할 것입니다. 그것은 여러분이 어떻게 살 것인가를 결정합니다. 최상의 교육을 받기 위해 오랜 시간을 통학할 각오도 할 것입니다. 여러분은 그것에 관해 얘기할 것이며, 그것에 관한 꿈을 꾸고, 싸우고, 투자를 하고, 결국에는 여러분의 모든 인생을 조종하는데 까지 이를지 모릅니다. 왜냐구요? 미래에 대하여 여러분이 바라 보는 것이 현재 어떻게 살 것인가를 결정합니다.
여러분이 미래에 행복과 안전을 가져오는 최상의 길이 돈을 소유하는 것이라고 믿는다면, 충분한 돈이나 물질을 소유하기 위해 모든 힘을 다하여 모든 일을 할 것입니다. 그것은 여러분의 일상생활을 좌우하고, 희생을 각오하도록 하거나 어떤 경우에는 죄악된 행동으로 이끌지 모릅니다.

Your view of the future determines what you do in the present ?that is why the when question is so important because it is a question of what you see in the future.
 
As we turn now to the passage in more detail let me acknowledge that there are many  Christians who would exegete this passage in a different way and come to very different conclusions than I am today. Therefore while I am convinced of what I am about to say I also acknowledge that I need to come with an extra humility in exegeting this passage. I also acknowledge that because we are covering such a significant amount of material in two weeks it is impossible to look at the passage verse by verse so we will be once again looking at particular verses and identifying particular themes.
여러분의 미래에 대한 시각이 현재 여러분이 하는 일을 결정합니다. 그것이 바로 ‘여러분이 미래에 무엇을 보는가’라는 물음이기에 ‘언제’라는 질문이 그렇게 중요한 것입니다.

좀더 자세한 본문으로 들어 가면서, 저는 많은 크리스챤들이 이 본문의 해석을 좀 다른 방식으로 해서 저와는 다른 결론에 이른다는 것을 인정합니다.제가 말씀 드리려고 하는 것에 확신을 가지고 있는 반면에 이 본문을 해석함에 있어 좀더 특별한 겸손이 필요함을 인정합니다. 아주 많은 양의 자료를 2주 간에 걸쳐 봐야 하므로 본문을 매절씩 보는 것은 불가능함을 인정합니다. 그래서 우리는 다시 특별한 구절을 볼 것이고 특별한 주제를  밝혀낼 것입니다. 

A Kaleidoscope of Time-Something close
 
The problem we have with this passage is that it is like looking into a kaleidoscope. When you look into a kaleidoscope you see lots of details/patterns and it is hard to see what is closest to you and what is furthest away.
 
So I think a good place to start in trying to understand what Jesus is saying about the question of when in Mark 13 is to compare two contradictory statements Jesus makes in Vs 30 an Vs 32-33.  One statement seems to speak of something close and the other of something further away.
